Vietnam praised for efforts to protect environment

   6/3/2008

Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Vietnam , Andrew Speedy, has praised Vietnamese ministries and sectors’ commitments and practical activities in environmental protection. At a press conference for World Environment Day (June 5), held in Hanoi on June 2 by the UN Development Programme and the Ministry of Labour, War Invalid and Social Affairs, the FAO representative praised the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s efforts to increase forest coverage and reduce the use of chemical fertilisers in crop planting to protect land and water resources. Nha Trang city in central Khanh Hoa province has been selected as Vietnam ’s focal point for World Environment Day activities. A parade with more than 2,000 people and electric cars and bikes and many activities in response to the UN Billion Tree Campaign will be held under the slogan “Co 2 , Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.” Joining 68 countries for the International Year of Planet Earth, Vietnam has also launched the Year of Planet Earth and is promoting activities to provide communities with guidance in preventing natural disasters, environment and community protection. Programmes and basic investment projects under the special “planet earth” theme will be developed. According to environmentalists, Vietnam is one of the countries to suffer biggest impacts of climate change if sea water level rises 1 metre. The country’s GDP loss to climate change is estimated to be 17 billion USD a year, with about one fifth of the population losing their homes and more than 12 percent of cultivated land expected to be flooded. Coastal areas will also be flooded. The government is developing measures to adapt to climate change, including protecting water resources, preventing land erosion, building models of community-based natural disaster prevention and promoting dissemination of information to kick the CO2 habit and protect the environment.
