The Government aims to mobilize all resources for effectively preventing and mitigating natural disasters in order to minimize damages on human life, property, environment resources and cultural heritages. Viet Nam always encourages individuals and organizations in and out the country to support people hit by natural disasters.
The Government always prioritizes to spend national budget on natural disaster prevention and mitigation projects and consequence recovery. ODA funds focus on capacity improvement, scientific - technological transfer and management experience sharing. The State also allows local areas to find investments and mobilize legal funds for this field.*
In Viet Nam, over the past 10 years, natural disasters have killed an average of 700 people a year. Annually property damage is estimated to be about 1.5 percent of the GDP. Typically, Linda typhoon hit in the coastal area of Southern Viet Nam in 1997 caused 778 died, 2,000 people missed, and 593 million USD lost. Flood in the Central in November 1999 also caused 620 people died and 314 million USD lost. Xangsen typhoon struck in Da Nang city in October 2006 made 600 people died and injured, and loss of above 620 million USD.
