The quality of Vietnamese cacao in the 2007-08 crop has exceeded the country’s set standards and of the same quality of other cacao producers in the world such as Ghana and Indonesia.*
The news was announced by Cargill company at a meeting of the Vietnam Cacao Development Committee in Ho Chi Minh City on May 30. The price of cacao in Vietnam has reached its peak at 35,000-40,000 VND per kg, 10,000 VND per kg over the price in late 2007, thus leading to expansion of cacao growing areas and trading and producing networks in the country.
However, 92 percent of Vietnam ’s cacao were exported in the form of dried seed. There are in southern provinces 10,300 ha of cacao with only 1,586 ha giving yield. The cacao acreage is expected to reach 14,150 ha by the end of this year.
The country has also mapped out a 2.5 million USD project to expand the cacao growing acreage to 80,000 ha by 2020, producing 108,000 tonnes of dried seed and earning an export revenue of between 100-120 millions USD.
