Official and working visit by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to the US Department of Agriculture

(ICD) Upon the invitation by the United States Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, between 20th and 23rd April, 2009, Minister Cao Duc Phat and the mission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development paid a working visit to the United States. During the stay in the US, Minister Cao Duc Phat had meetings with the US Agriculture Secretary, US Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Other meetings were also conducted with Mr. Mike McIntyre - Chairman of the Subcommittee on Specialty Crops, Rural Development and Foreign Agriculture of the House of Representatives, and with Senator Saxby Chambliss, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture. During these meetings, the Minister expressed gratitude for the good cooperation from the US Department of Agriculture, and mentioned to the US Agriculture Secretary, Trade Representative and the Congressmen the hope to strengthen agricultural cooperation with the US. The Minister also raised, among other things, issues of tra, basa and fruit exports from Vietnam to the US, the cooperation in fighting avian influenza, science and technology, disaster mitigation in the context of global climate change, as well as the request for the US Government to grant Vietnam the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) status. The mission also discussed about the US request for imports of over 30-months beef into Vietnam. The US Secretary, Trade Representative and Congressmen all showed great interest in strengthening the cooperation with Vietnam. During another meeting with the US Agency for International Development (USAid), several matters were brought up. The US announced an assistance fund (US$500,000) to help Vietnam organise a Global Ministerial Meeting on Avian Influenza in Vietnam in early 2010. Minister Cao Duc Phat also visited and expressed thanks to the World Bank for their support to the agriculture and rural sector in Vietnam through various large projects. The Ambassador of Vietnam to the US, Mr. Le Cong Phung, also participated in the meetings with Minister Cao Duc Phat.
