Mid-term Review of the Consultative Group (CG) for Vietnam

   7/3/2009

(ICD) On 8th June, 2009, the MARD delegation headed by Vice Minister Ho Xuan Hung participated in the informal meeting of the Consultative Group for Vietnam in Buon Ma Thuot. The meeting focused on the following topics: re-assessment of the macro-economic management model in Vietnam in the recent time and the impacts of the economic crisis on the socio-economic life. The participants also listened to the reports on the results of the Vietnam Business Forum, the Anti-Corruption Dialogue. They also discussed the importance of good governance and strengthened efforts for anti-corruption. The meeting also talked on the challenges facing Vietnam in the future such as climate change, and how to improve the effectiveness of assistance. In the opening remarks, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem reviewed the recent implementation of the economic stimulus package and its influence on the economy, as well as the internal and external challenges facing Vietnam. He also briefed the donors about the poverty reduction situation in Vietnam in the context of the current economic depression and called for further assistance and support for Vietnam from the donors community. The donors community expressed high appreciation for the Government of Vietnam’s efforts in addressing the economic difficulties, and were committed to continuing the assistance and support to help Vietnam overcome the economic crisis. The Government and the development partners both agreed that climate change poses great dangers to the socio-economic life in Vietnam, especially the life of the inhabitants in the lowland and coastal areas. The development partners for Vietnam also complimented the Government for its tireless efforts in improving the assistance effectiveness. The Government of Vietnam always values ODA and considers it one of the economic stimulus measures in the context of economic crisis. The Government is committed to ensure sufficient counterpart budget for the on-going and pipelined ODA projects.
