Meeting of the 1st ASEAN Fisheries Consultative Forum (AFCF) and the 17th ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Fisheries (ASWGFi)

(ICD) Between 1-5 June, 2009 in Hoi An, Quang Nam, MARD hosted the 1st ASEAN Fisheries Consultative Forum (AFCF) to discuss the hot issues related to fisheries management in the member countries such as: cambating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, resources protection, co-management and addressing the impacts of climate change. The meeting came up with a framework plan of action for AFCF and the work plans for each area to be submitted to the ASWGFi. The participants were experts from the 10 ASEAN member countries and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat, together with some foreign embassies in Vietnam and the FAO Regional Office. The AFCF was established after the ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) Meeting held in Hanoi, upon the recommendation by the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Fisheries (ASWGFi). The 17th ASWGFi meeting took place between 3-5 June, 2009 with the participants from the 10 ASEAN members, ASEAN Secretariat, representatives of some foreign embassies in Vietnam, SEAFDEC, the FAO Regional Office. The ASEAN Secretariat informed the participants about the emerging issues after the 30th AMAF Meeting, the situation of ASEAN Community Integration, the status of the ASEAN Economic Community, etc. The participants discussed various issues, including the promotion of fisheries cooperation through the strengthened implementation of the Strategic Action Plan for 2005-2010 to ensure the attainment of the set-out objectives within the expected timeframe. The meeting also discussed and came up with some recommendations of ASEAN regarding the new EC Regulation on Catch Documentation to be submitted to the SOM-AMAF leaders. This is an important step in order to raise a common voice of the region to protect the fair and legitimate rights of the developing countries in Southeast Asia./.
