Develop cooperatives to be firm foundation for national economy

   10/6/2010

Speaking at the Fourth-term (2010-2015) National Congress of the Vietnam’s Cooperatives Alliance on 13 August 2010, Mr. Truong Tan Sang on behalf of the Party and the State, praised the significant results archived in the collective economic sector by the system of the Cooperatives Union at all levels, while affirming, to develop cooperatives, the core part of the collective economy, is to make the collective economy together with the State economy become increasingly solid foundation of the national economy. Vietnam’s Cooperatives Alliance focussses on review, evaluation and solutions to reorganize, renew, and strengthen weak cooperatives; provides guidance, support and help to the cooperatives that have been enhanced with facilities to strenghten capcity and improve operational efficiency, and at the same time increases advocacy, guidance and facilitates the establishment of new cooperatives in all sectors and geographical areas. Over the past five years, the cooperative sector has made an important change in terms of quantity, structure, capacity and performance quality. The old cooperatives have basically completed the conversion, with many newly established cooperatives and there have been some cooperatives doing business more effectively. So far, there have been over 360,000 cooperative groups nationwide, more than 18,200 cooperatives and more than 50 unions of cooperatives, with over 12.5 million members. The cooperatives sector has made significant contributions to the national socio-economic development, contributing 5.45% to the country’s GDP (2009). With the slogan "Unity, development cooperation for the sake of community and social welfare"; from now on to 2015, Vietnam’s Cooperatives Alliance tries to increase the number of well performed cooperatives to more than 55%; and to newly establish from 850 to 900 cooperative annually.
