Viet Nam, New Zealand cooperate in food value chain development

   10/14/2015

The Seminar on “The development of sustainable food value chains – from local creation to global consumption” was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and New Zealand Government to Government (G2G) Partnerships Limited.

This seminar is being delivered as part of a new mode of cooperation between New Zealand and Vietnam focusing on Government-to-Government commercial partnerships, which provide access to world-leading expertise and experience held by New Zealand Government entities. It is another important part of the partnership between New Zealand and Vietnam in the agriculture sector, and supports the work under way through the New Zealand’s development assistance programme and the Food Safety Cooperation mechanism set up between the two Governments in March 2015.

New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Haike Manning said, “Similar to Vietnam, agriculture and food sectors have been crucial to New Zealand’s economy. More than 80% of New Zealand’s total agricultural production is now exported. To get to this point New Zealand faced challenges around food safety and quality control, productivity, and distribution.”

Ambassador Manning added stressed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement concluded would be huge opportunities for Vietnam’s agricultural sector as a result of these agreements but such opportunities can depend on having high quality systems and products and deep knowledge of building brands and marketing in overseas markets.  New Zealand has done this successfully with a range of agricultural products, including dairy, fruit, meat, wine and others. “We have developed world-leading expertise, which we believe will be relevant as Vietnam grows its own food value chains. This seminar is a great opportunity for New Zealand agricultural and food experts to visit and share ideas as well as look for business cooperation opportunity in Viet Nam, in order to support productivity growth objectives in the agricultural sector of the Vietnamese government.” said H.E Haike Manning.

Mr. Dang Kim Son - economic and agricultural and rural development policy expert said that New Zealand was a very good country in science and technology (S&T) application and international cooperation, connecting with all advantaged partners and gaining benefits from those advantages. At the same time, New Zealand strongly accessed the international competitive issues to export agricultural products to global market. So the first point that Viet Nam can learn from New Zealand was the agricultural development thought.
